How to Dress Like Rachel Zane from Suits

suits_charactergallery_rachel_02

I love Suits for it’s amazing work fashion. Every character has an amazing sense of style and a covetable work wardrobe. Like I’ve said before, no matter what your profession there’s lots of great fashion inspiration on Suits for work. Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle) is  a paralegal on the show Suits who befriends and then dates the show’s protagonist, Mike Ross. She has plans to eventually become a lawyer at her firm, and wants to do so without the help of her father who is a famous trial attorney. I would describe Rachel’s style as sexy office chic. Women who work in conservative offices probably couldn’t get away with some of the tops that she wears. However anyone can take inspiration from the way that she mixes classic pieces and adds a more youthful edge to them.  Here’s how to dress like Rachel Zane:

Combine V-Neck Shirts and Sweaters with Pencil Skirts

Suits

This is Rachel’s go to office look.  Her  tops pair well with her classic pencil skirts and pumps but the v-neck silhouette gives her outfits a sexier, less conservative vibe. The women in Suits can get away with a lot. In real life this is a great combo for a business casual office  as long as the neckline isn’t too low, and your skirt is not too form fitting.

Wear Classic Button Down Shirts with Rolled Sleeves

A button down and pencil skirt will always be a timeless, professional office look. Rachel looks classic but stylish by rolling up her sleeves and letting the edges poke up just a bit.

Semi Annual Style: Brooks Brothers

The Brooks Brothers semi-annual sale starts monday June 17, so it’ll be worth checking out the site then, or visiting a store for deals (up to 50% off women’s clothing and 25% off accessories).  Brooks Brothers can be VERY pricey at times, but for a professional woman (or a student planning to enter the professional world eventually) it’s so worth it to splurge on a few staple items that you’ll want to last a very long time because of one word: quality. And waiting for a big sale like a semi-annual sale can be really helpful.

My first Brooks Brother’s item was a classic white non-iron dress shirt. Not only are these shirts incredibly versatile, but the quality of the shirt was 10x better than a lot of the other button down shirts that I had. It’s amazing how much the crispness of a perfect button down can improve your outfit, especially for work.

Here are a few other items from Brooks Brothers that are already on sale that I would recommend for building your wardrobe:

Non-Iron Classic Solid Dress Shirt $39.40

Looks to Love: 4 Chic Shift Dresses from Oasap (Plus the Giveaway Winner Announced)

The temperature is still rising, and if you have to look professional for your job or internship you pretty much can’t go wrong with one of the following three ensembles: A shift dress, a skirt and short sleeve blouse or button down, or a lightweight pant in a neutral color and a blouse. For those of you who work in ultra conservative offices (i.e. some of you lawyers and legal interns) try suits in lighter colors like tan and light gray. And for you ladies who own your own businesses or work in creative fields or start ups, try a shorts suit- it looks modern and glam.

I have a romantic style personality so I generally love dresses and a shift dress looks so chic and polished. In honor of the latest giveaway from Oasap, I found a few shift dresses from the site that I love. Pair cute dresses like these with neutral accessories or add a complimentary pop of color (and yes peplum looks are still in- they’re a great way to add an extra touch of style to a more conservative silhouette).

Wardrobe Remix: The Floral Skirt

Recently I did a post on how to style a simple striped t-shirt for work and the weekend. This post is also about remixing to get the most out of your wardrobe; a spring and summer staple like a floral skirt can easily be styled as part of a casual work look and a weekend look using accessories. Here’s how I would switch it up for the office and for fun saturday activities:

Summer Essentials: Completing Your Wardrobe

Back in february I did a post on spring essentials and now that it’s almost June it’s definitely time to start getting ready for summer if you haven’t already. I’m hoping for more beautiful weather and a chance to wear breezy summer items as soon as possible. As always, complete an easy and interchangeable summer wardrobe by investing in the basics and then adding fun accessories. Here are my picks for summer essentials for the weekend and for work.

For The Weekend:

A Maxi Dress

A maxi dress is a great summer staple because it’s such an easy garment- just throw it on, and the length gives it instant glam. You can give it a casual vibe by pairing it with neutral accessories and sandals. Or go glam by pairing it with statement jewelry and heels or wedges. Start with a maxi dress in a neutral color (of course black is very versatile) and then invest in one in a fun print or color like this ombre maxi dress from Old Navy.

A Flirty Sundress

A sundress is just one of those iconic summer items. Even a print sundress like this polka dot dress from Victoria’s Secret is incredibly versatile. Throw on a cropped  jean jacket and a cool pair of shades to meet up with friends or just add heels and lipstick for a pretty date look.

Shorts

If you like to wear shorts in the summertime you can’t go wrong by investing in a pair of jean shorts, white shorts, shorts in a solid color, and one fun print. These four options will work with pretty much any top.

A Retro or Glam Swimsuit

Invest in a glam one piece or bikini that makes you feel amazing. This romper style suit from Victoria’s Secret has a retro vibe that’s very flattering. If you’re going on vacation bring at least 2-3 suits including one in a neutral color like black, white, or navy.

A Pretty Coverup or Caftan

A pretty coverup is a must for the beach or pool. If you have a solid swimsuit, go for a fun print. A long print caftan like this one from Victoria’s Secret is glamorous.

A Straw Tote

A straw tote is versatile enough for the beach, meeting up with friends for weekend adventures, or just running errands. A neutral tote in a tan or brown shade is versatile but don’t be afraid to go for a bold print like this Loft tote to add a pop of color to your outfits.

A Colorful Clutch

A colorful clutch can also provide just the right pop of color or compliment the colors you’re already wearing. The summer is the easiest season to go bold with colors and prints, and this clutch from the Loft is summery and whimsical.

Sandals

Sandals are an absolute must during the summer and although these come in lots of fun colors as well, make sure you invest in neutral colors and metallics like gold and silver, so they’ll easily work with different outfits. Add a touch of glam with sparkles or beading.

Bangles

I don’t think you’re fully dressed until you’ve accessorized. Pretty bangles like these bangles from Stella and Dot will work with a lot of causal and dressy outfits, putting the finishing note on your outfit.

For Work:

Short Sleeve Blouses

Short sleeve blouses like this blouse from the Loft are versatile and work with skirts or pants. It works just as well under a suit as it does on causal friday.

A Print or Colored Skirt

Wearing an a-line or pencil skirt in a fun print or color can easily make you the most stylish person in the office that day. Just make sure everything else is neutral. And if you work in a somewhat conservative environment, stick to shades of blue or green.

A Nude Pump

If you didn’t invest in a nude pump for spring, it’s a great item for summer as well (nude pumps can be useful year round) and they’re great with both lighter shades and bright colors.

Hope this gave you some inspiration for summer! Look out for a summer fashion giveaway on monday.

Wardrobe Remix: The Striped Shirt

Remixing items in your wardrobe is the key to getting the most value out of the clothes that you own. Using one item for different looks is easy when you start with the basics as building blocks, and add fun accessories later. I listed some of the spring basics previously in my post Spring Essentials: Completing Your Polished Wardrobe, and I’ll be adding a post on summer essentials soon. You can create a lot of different looks with something as simple as a striped shirt. I used a $9.90 striped shirt from Uniqlo and styled it as part of two casual work looks and one casual weekend look below.

Style Inspiration: Mango

Mango is one of my absolute favorite brands. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with Mango, it has a Zara vibe (or you could say it’s like a slightly more upscale version of h&m) with lots of feminine and trendy pieces in addition to classic pieces with interesting details. I love mango because you can always find something amazing there, and often the prices are really great. There’s no store location in DC anymore, but they do have Mango in other places like Orlando and New York. And thank goodness there’s always online shopping..check out the Mango website here. For today’s post I chose 4 pieces from Mango that I believe transition from the office to cocktails, and day to night seamlessly. I styled them as work looks, but you can easily change it up by switching out your accessories for fun/dressy pieces.

Mango Wide Leg Jumpsuit
Mango Draped Satin Dress
Mango Side Knot Dress
Mango Pleated Printed Dress
What do you think of these pieces from Mango? I hope you can use these looks for inspiration for transitional work pieces!
