How to Achieve Perfect Berry or Wine Hued Lips for Fall

One of my favorite things about fall (besides crisp weather, tall boots, warm seasonal lattes, and cozy knits of course) is being able to wear fall makeup looks. The darker and muted tones of fall can be very glamorous. A wine or berry hued lip while the rest of your face is natural looks very sophisticated and pretty for any occasion. A wine or berry hued lip paired with smokey eyes is dramatic and glamorous for a special occasion or night out. Here’s a general how to and some of my favorite fall lipstick shades to try. Also see below for a great video from Andrea’s Choice (I listed her as one of my top 5 youtube makeup artists to help you perfect your work/class look) on how to create 3 pretty fall makeup looks.

Directions for applying fall lipstick shades: First make sure your lips are exfoliated! You can use a lip or sugar scrub, a toothbrush (be gentle!), or a wet cloth to exfoliate. Then apply lip balm for moisture. Apply a lip primer or a tiny bit of concealer to your lips (optional). Line your lips with a lipliner in a matching or close shade. Fill in your lips (a lip brush is optional but works great). Line your lips again with the lipliner. If you prefer a less matte look (although matte is great for fall shades) apply a dab of clear or nude lipgloss.  Tip from Andrea’s Choice- Get rid of excess lipstick on the inside of your mouth by closing your lips around your index finger and pulling it out. Do this in the center of your mouth then repeat on the corners.

Here are 5 great fall shades to try:

5 Amazing Neutral Eyeshadows (Plus the Benefit Cosmetics Giveaway Winner Revealed)

My typical eye look for work or class has pretty much always been a thin line of black eyeliner and mascara (still loving the Benefit They’re Real mascara) plus some highlight powder, but if I’m going for a slightly dressier day look I’ll also use a very neutral shadow. Neutral eyeshadows are great because they’re versatile and can easily create nighttime looks when layered with other colors. If you’re looking for a neutral palette, there’s few who will disagree with the greatness of the Naked and Naked 2 palettes by Urban Decay.  At $50 each these palettes are pricey but worth it. However if you’re just looking for a great neutral shadow rather than an entire palette, here are a few of my faves:

MAC Eyeshadow in Soft Brown $15

Beauty Guide: BB and CC Creams

Lately I’ve seen a lot of makeup and skincare companies putting out BB and CC creams. I wondered for a while what these were (some kind of super primer? Just a marketing gimmick?) so I did some research and came up with a general guide for those of you who, like me, want to know what these products actually do, and for those of you who are simply looking to invest in a new BB or CC Cream.

What is BB Cream?

The bottom line- A tinted cream that’s lighter than foundation and heavier than tinted moisturizer, that also acts as a moisturizer, primer, and sunscreen.

BB stands for beauty balm or blemish balm. The purpose of a BB cream is to replace several of the makeup products you use the most with one simple product. This is perfect for a busy woman on the go who needs to save time by simplifying her makeup and skincare routine in the morning. It can be worn alone for light coverage or worn under foundation as a primer.

What are the drawbacks? Some BB Creams aren’t as great at moisturizing as others, and right now most come in  a very limited range of shades.

What is CC Cream?

The bottom line- The newer and usually more improved version of the BB Cream.

CC stands for color correcting. CC creams have the same uses as BB creams (moisturizing, sun protection, and priming) but offer better coverage for uneven skin tones than BB Creams. CC creams also generally have a lighter texture.

What are the drawbacks? CC creams also come in a limited range of shades right now (but can be worn under your regular foundation).

Beauty Spotlight: Benefit Cosmetics

My super stylish mom (and partner for my personal styling business- Cashmere Closets) recently had her brows and eyelashes done by an expert named Kelly at the Anjella Paulette Day Spa in Norfolk Va.  Kelly was trained as a brow and lash expert by Benefit Cosmetics and flew all over the world providing this service for special events (they even worked on the movie Snow White and the Huntsman) before settling down in Virginia. My mom came back from her appointment gushing about Benefit Cosmetics and everything that she learned from Kelly. I realized that although I’ve definitely seen Benefit before (who can miss the funny and adorable packaging) I hadn’t really given it a chance yet. Although I’m hopping on the Benefit train late, I was excited to give it a try.

Benefit Cosmetics was founded by twins Jean and Jane Ford in 1976. It’s currently sold in more than 30 countries and owned by Louis Vuitton (LVMH). The brand focuses on healthy skin, quick fixes for beauty problems, and natural pretty looks. This is perfect for everyday looks (and great for a student or professional woman who needs a natural beauty look during the day). You can easily find this brand at your local Ulta or Sephora, or online. Here are some of Benefit Cosmetic’s best products:

I have to say that I really love the “They’re Real” mascara. It gave my lashes a lot of length.  I also loved the brow kit, grooming and filling in my brows is one of the most important parts of my beauty routine and the kit makes it easy.

Check out more Benefit products here, and look out for a new giveaway on monday and a new post on wednesday!

5 Makeup Tutorial Artists to Help You Perfect Your Work/Class Look

Thanks to youtube if you’re new to makeup or just want new tips on enhancing your look you can easily get a lesson from a pro these days. I love beauty and makeup so whenever I discover a new makeup guru that I love I binge watch their videos and it always inspires me to try something different. Below I’ve included videos from 5 of my favorite makeup tutorial artists. These videos are great for perfecting a natural and pretty work or class look. These ladies really know what they’re doing (just check out the before and afters). If any of the steps are too high maintenance for your morning routine just swap them out for simpler ones (i.e. your favorite mascara instead of false lashes) and prepare to be inspired!

Tip for email subscribers: Depending on which email service you’re using, it may be best to view this post online to see the youtube videos.
